Barack Obama, a former president, is receiving backlash online for opposing book bans, a hot subject since it was found that sexually explicit novels were being kept in public school libraries.
Obama expressed his views in a letter sent to “America’s dedicated and hardworking librarians” on Twitter.
The letter referred to how authors like Mark Twain and James Baldwin influenced the former president’s formative years and continued by noting how “banned books” frequently include or are written by “people of color, indigenous individuals, as well as members of the LGBTQ+ community,” calling the strategy “misguided.”
The letter claims that “the tendency is to stifle opposing viewpoints rather than debate them, learn from them, or try to comprehend them.”
“Today, individuals who disagree with particular ideas or viewpoints are challenging some of the works that have influenced my life—and the lives of so many other individuals.” The former president wrote, “And librarians remain on the front lines, battling every day to make the broadest range of thoughts, beliefs, and ideas accessible to everyone.”
Obama’s position received a ton of ridicule on Twitter. The most contentious “banned books,” which contain photographs of graphic sexual imagery, were shared by followers.
“Barack, I’ll run advertisements throughout the nation to let everyone know if you will read ‘Gender Queer,’ then justify making it freely accessible to children. Your party wants youngsters to read it, but you’ll refuse to read it since you know it will offend most people,” wrote Robby Starbuck, a former Republican contender for Congress in Tennessee. The book contains drawings of gay intercourse.
“Did you like Gender Queer a lot? Did it affect how you live? Banning books is not the same as removing offensive material from classrooms,” according to another response.
Another user commented, “How about you persuade Joe Biden to take part in a public reading of one of these books in the presence of kids; that ought to be right up his alley.”
Obama was accused of purposely trying to mislead the people, according to several responses.
Another user said, “You are so clever in your use of language that you’re making the uninformed voters think that the problem is actually about banning books. It is about preventing youngsters from having access to pornographic materials and making them read books that promote left-leaning beliefs as part of required sex education.”
Obama’s predecessor, first lady Jill Biden, had stated that no books should be removed from school libraries, regardless of their content. She made this statement in September.
At the time, Biden stated that “all books ought to be in the library,” as The Daily Wire had previously reported. “Every book. We are in America. We don’t prohibit literature.”
