The state of Missouri is making history, taking the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to court over its role in the COVID-19 pandemic. While the rest of the country has moved on, Missouri remains the only state fighting to hold Beijing accountable for the devastation caused by the virus.
And now, China is panicking.
As Missouri’s lawsuit moves through federal court, the CCP is lashing out, calling the case a “farce” and vowing “resolute and effective measures” if the proceedings aren’t halted. But Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey isn’t backing down—he’s demanding China pay $25 billion in damages for its reckless handling of the pandemic.
China Hoarded PPE While the World Suffered
The case centers around a damning accusation: China stockpiled masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) while the rest of the world faced dangerous shortages.
Before the pandemic, China supplied half of the world’s surgical masks. But as COVID-19 spread, Beijing shut down exports, hoarded supplies, and let prices skyrocket—all while suppressing information about the virus’s outbreak.
As a result, American doctors and nurses were forced to ration masks, reuse protective gear, and face unnecessary exposure to the virus. Missouri’s lawsuit argues that China’s selfish actions led to an even greater spread of COVID in the U.S.
Beijing Melts Down, Threatens Retaliation
Unsurprisingly, China isn’t taking this lawsuit well. The CCP has refused to participate in the court proceedings, instead calling it “frivolous litigation” that defies international law.
But Beijing’s panicked response says it all. If China really had nothing to hide, why wouldn’t it defend itself in court?
Sean King, an expert on Asian policy, summed it up best:
“If COVID-19 had originated in Missouri and killed millions worldwide, Beijing would be the first to demand accountability.”
The Chinese government is also hinting at retaliation against the U.S., including stripping American immunity in Chinese courts. In other words, Beijing wants to punish the U.S. for daring to seek justice.
What’s Next? Will Missouri Win?
The lawsuit has already reached the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, and legal experts believe the judge is leaning in Missouri’s favor. A final ruling is expected in the coming weeks, and if China loses and refuses to pay, Missouri could seize Chinese assets within the state to collect damages.
For now, Beijing can continue throwing tantrums. But Missouri isn’t budging. One state is standing up to China—and the rest of America should take notes.
