According to a poll, former President Donald Trump leads Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) by over 20 points in a potential Republican primary fight in 2024.
According to a Morning Consult poll issued Tuesday, Trump has the backing of 49 percent of possible GOP primary voters, putting him 18 points ahead of his nearest challenger, DeSantis, who has 31 percent. No other possible challenger surpassed the 10% level.
Former President Mike Pence received 8% of the vote, placing him third, followed by former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), and departing Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), who each received 2% of the vote. Former Sec. of State Mike Pompeo, as well as Governors Greg Abbott (R-TX), Kristi Noem (R-SD), and Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) received 1% support.
According to the study, 37 percent of DeSantis supporters prefer Trump as their second choice, while 15 percent prefer Pence if the Florida governor does not run. In that scenario, Cruz gains 11% of DeSantis’ fans, while Haley gains 9%. Similarly, DeSantis is the second option of 43 percent of Trump supporters, while 18 percent say that they would vote for Pence if Trump were not in the race. Another nine percent would favor Cruz, and three percent would vote for Haley.
Morning Consult polled 4,125 potential primary voters from December 9-11 in the poll concentrating on the 2024 GOP primary. It has a two-percentage-point margin of error.
Morning Consult also polled 7000 registered voters between December 9 and 11 on probable Republican nominees and President Joe Biden matchups in the 2024 general election. The margin of error for this survey is one percent. In a rematch between Trump and Biden, 43 percent would vote for Biden, while 41 percent would vote for Trump. Another 10% intend to vote for someone else, while 5% are unsure in such a campaign.
In a hypothetical contest between Biden and DeSantis, both candidates received 42% of the support. Another 7% said that they would vote for another candidate, and 8% were not sure.
