George Stephanopoulos, the host for ABC News, acknowledged this week that a recent ABC News/Washington Post survey is terrible for President Biden.
Stephanopoulos claimed on ABC’s “This Week” that “this survey is absolutely devastating for President Biden.”
What did the survey reveal?
The survey indicated that Donald Trump is preferred by a majority of Americans by a staggering 18-point margin over Joe Biden in terms of how well he has managed the economy, and that Biden’s job approval numbers are 20 points below average (36% approval to 56% disapproval).
And the survey indicated that in a hypothetical rematch between Biden and Trump, the president would lose despite the fact that most respondents said they think Trump should be charged with crimes for a number of possible cases against him: Just 38% of those polled said they would “likely” or “definitely” vote for Biden, compared to 44% who said they would “likely” or “definitely” vote for Trump.
According to the survey, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) would beat Biden by a margin of 42% to 37%.
The ABC/WaPo survey, like a number of recent polls, revealed that the majority of Democratic-leaning Americans are opposed to Biden being their party’s candidate in 2024. And as if things couldn’t get much worse for Biden, two out of every three respondents indicated they didn’t think he was mentally or physically capable of becoming president. The majority also said that they don’t trust Biden.
Meanwhile, Rick Klein, political director for ABC News, described how Biden continues to lose support from those that he requires in order to win re-election.
“You can clearly see the coalition’s flaws, which helped Joe Biden win the 2020 presidential election. Against Donald Trump, Biden won independents by a margin of 13 points. Among those same people, he is now 9 points behind Trump,” according to Klein.
“In 2020, he won over black voters by a 75 point margin. He has only gained 35,” he added. “That might seem like a lot, but the reality is that a Democrat doesn’t need that kind of number to win in today’s politics.”
