The disturbing details surrounding the murders of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, continue to raise grim questions—especially about what those closest to them appear to have known in the hours and days leading up to their deaths.
According to reporting from The Hollywood Reporter, the couple attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday night under unusual circumstances. Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was not invited to the event. Still, Rob and Michele reportedly asked O’Brien if Nick could accompany them anyway. The reason, according to the report, was troubling: the couple allegedly did not want to leave their son home alone.
The outlet claims Nick’s behavior had become “extreme and stressful” and had grown “even more concerning in recent weeks.” He had reportedly been living in the guesthouse of the family’s Brentwood home under what was described as “watchful supervision.” That phrase alone should give any parent pause.
At the party, Nick reportedly made other guests uncomfortable by repeatedly asking strange questions—people’s first and last names and whether they were famous. In one awkward exchange with comedian Bill Hader, Nick allegedly became upset and “stormed off.” Rob Reiner is said to have confronted his son about his “asocial and unsettling behavior,” then apologized to O’Brien before leaving the party early with Michele and Nick.
Less than 24 hours later, Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead in their home with stab wounds and their throats slit open.
Nick Reiner was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. Authorities say he checked into a hotel in Santa Monica before being taken into custody and left behind a bloodstained room. He is currently being held without bail at Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility, has been placed on suicide watch, and did not appear at his arraignment after failing to be “medically cleared.”
