Pennsylvania House Democrats introduced a resolution last month honoring March as “National Women’s Month” — a real feel-good, applause-line, nobody-could-possibly-object kind of thing. State Rep. Carol Hill-Evans, a Democrat from York, stood up and talked about “celebrating the extraordinary accomplishments of women.” Beautiful stuff. Inspiring. There was just one tiny problem: Republican Rep. Aaron Bernstine filed an amendment asking them to define the word “woman” in the resolution.
Thirty seconds later, the Democrats pulled the entire resolution from the floor and ran away like someone had pulled the fire alarm. The chamber erupted in laughter. Actual, audible laughter. On the floor of the Pennsylvania state legislature. Because Democrats would rather torpedo their own bill honoring women than admit that women exist as a biological category.
You can’t make this stuff up!
Democrats wrote a resolution celebrating women. A Republican said, “Cool — can we just clarify what a woman is?” And instead of saying “Yes, obviously, here’s the definition that every human being on Earth knew until about six years ago,” they grabbed the resolution, stuffed it in a shredder, and pretended the whole thing never happened.
Bernstine’s amendment was, in his words, “very straightforward and clear.” He told the chamber, “It defines what a woman actually is — because we do know what that is.” And he’s right. We do. Every farmer, nurse, mechanic, and kindergartner in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania can tell you what a woman is. The only people on the planet who suddenly can’t answer that question are elected Democrats who are terrified of their own activist base.
A spokesman for the House Republican Caucus put it perfectly: “If Democrats want to celebrate what they refuse to define, it is clear they do not take this issue seriously.” That’s the ballgame right there. You can’t throw a party for a guest of honor you won’t identify. That’s like hosting a birthday party and refusing to say whose birthday it is. “We’re here to celebrate someone! No, we can’t tell you who. Just eat the cake and stop asking questions.”
This is the modern Democratic Party in one perfect, crystallized moment. They want all the credit for supporting women — the yard signs, the pink hats, the fundraising emails — without ever having to commit to the basic biological reality of what a woman is. Because the second they do, they lose either the women’s rights crowd or the trans activist crowd, and they’ve decided the trans activist crowd is scarier.
Think about what that means. Pennsylvania Democrats are more afraid of a strongly worded tweet from a blue-haired activist in Philadelphia than they are of looking like complete fools on the floor of their own legislature. And they looked like complete fools. The video is everywhere. Republicans are laughing. Normal people are laughing. The only people not laughing are the Democrats who had to slink back to their offices and explain to their staff why they just killed their own resolution.
Here’s what kills me. These are the same people who lecture us — constantly, relentlessly, with the energy of a thousand TED talks — about “protecting women’s rights.” They scream about the wage gap. They scream about reproductive rights. They scream about glass ceilings. But when a Republican says, “Okay, who exactly are we protecting?” they go mute. Completely, totally, stone-cold silent. Speaker Joanna McClinton recognized Bernstine to introduce his amendment and then watched as her own caucus torpedoed the bill rather than let the amendment get a vote.
This is what happens when your party is held hostage by ideology that is insane. We all know it’s insane. Seventy percent of Americans — including a majority of Democrats, by the way — can tell you that biological sex is real and that a woman is an adult human female. But Democratic elected officials can’t say that out loud because the moment they do, they get primaried by someone who thinks chromosomes are a social construct.
The Pennsylvania House currently has a one-seat Democratic majority. One seat. These people are clinging to power by their fingernails in a state that Trump won, and instead of reading the room and acting like normal human beings, they’re pulling their own bills off the floor because they’re afraid of a dictionary definition.
We didn’t even have to set a trap here. They set the trap for themselves, walked into it, and then somehow managed to also trip over it on the way down. All Republicans had to do was ask one simple question — a question that every civilization in human history could answer without breaking a sweat — and Democrats imploded.
If you ever needed proof that the modern left has completely lost the plot, this is it. They can’t even honor women without a crisis of conscience. They wrote the resolution. They sponsored it. They brought it to the floor. And when they were asked to stand behind the most basic premise of their own bill — that women are, you know, women — they chose to destroy it instead.
Happy Women’s Month, Pennsylvania. Your Democratic representatives would love to celebrate you — they just can’t figure out who you are.
