New York City’s brand-new communist mayor Zohran Mamdani just appointed someone who has never served a single day as a firefighter to run the largest fire department in the United States. Lillian Bonsignore is a 31-year EMT veteran, the first openly gay FDNY commissioner, and — according to her own proud declaration at the press conference — she “could start an IV.”
Fantastic! Next time your apartment building is engulfed in flames on the fourteenth floor, you’ll be thrilled to know the person running the rescue operation can get a needle in your vein. Assuming there’s anything left of you to stick.

Ted Cruz added his own dry assessment: “A great idea! Unless there’s a fire.” But Mamdani — a 34-year-old democratic socialist who took his oath of office on a Quran while Bernie Sanders officiated and AOC delivered opening remarks — isn’t worried about any of that. He got his trailblazer moment, and that’s what matters when you’re running the city Democrats have turned into a progressive carnival.
Bonsignore’s big qualification, the one every headline breathlessly repeated, is that she’s the first openly gay commissioner in the FDNY’s 160-year history. Brianna Lyman at The Federalist captured it perfectly: “I know if I’m burning to death in a building I’ll at least be happy knowing that while the FDNY commissioner never ever served as a firefighter, she’s a lesbian.”
That’s the thing about Democrats. They don’t hire people to do the job. They hire people to *be* the job’s diversity mascot. Competence is a secondary consideration — if it’s a consideration at all.
Now, to be fair, Bonsignore ran EMS operations during COVID and oversaw 4,300 providers handling about 1.5 million calls a year. That’s not nothing. She’s clearly a capable administrator in the emergency medical world. But running an ambulance fleet and commanding firefighters charging into burning high-rises are two wildly different skill sets. One involves triage and transport logistics. The other involves understanding how fire behaves inside a skyscraper, managing ladder companies, and making split-second decisions about structural collapse that determine whether your people come home alive.
She has zero experience with any of that. But she’s confident it won’t matter!
Here’s what makes this even more ridiculous. New York City couldn’t even figure out who its fire commissioner *was* for a hot minute. Mamdani announced Bonsignore at 1 p.m. on December 23rd. One hour later, outgoing Mayor Eric Adams — the indicted-on-corruption-charges Eric Adams — held a spite ceremony at Gracie Mansion to swear in his own guy, Mark Guerra, a 36-year FDNY veteran. Guerra’s appointment lasted a grand total of eight days before Mamdani took office on January 1st.
So New York briefly had two fire commissioners at once. A city with 8.3 million people that can’t decide who’s in charge of putting out fires. Sleep tight, Manhattan!
The previous commissioner, Robert Tucker, resigned twelve hours after Mamdani won the election and immediately flew to Israel. Can’t say we blame him. Tucker wasn’t a firefighter either, by the way — he came from “global security and cyberintelligence,” whatever that means. His predecessor, Laura Kavanagh, organized political campaigns before landing the gig. So the FDNY hasn’t had an actual firefighter running it in years. Democrats have systematically turned the position into a patronage appointment for political allies and identity-group tokens.
And Mamdani is the logical endpoint of that trajectory. This is the guy Trump called a “Communist Lunatic.” Bernie Sanders — the single most influential political figure in Mamdani’s life, by his own admission — swore him in at the inauguration. AOC gave opening remarks. They threw a block party in the Canyon of Heroes, a stretch of Broadway historically reserved for honoring astronauts, war heroes, and championship teams. Now it hosts parties for a socialist assemblyman who squeaked into the mayor’s office with 50.8% of the vote.
Mamdani also brought on “Ms. Rachel” — the children’s YouTube personality turned pro-Palestinian activist — as part of his administration. Because obviously what New York City Hall needs right now is the lady who sings the ABCs to toddlers.
This is what Democrats do to every institution they touch. They hollow it out, replace competence with ideology, stuff the leadership positions with people who check the right demographic boxes, and then act stunned when the whole thing stops working. We watched it happen in real time with the Los Angeles wildfires when their DEI deputy fire chief couldn’t waddle up a flight of stairs. We watched it happen with the East Palestine train derailment when Pete Buttigieg was too busy collecting frequent flyer miles to show up for weeks.
Now New York has handed its fire department to someone whose proudest professional boast is inserting an IV. When — not if — something goes catastrophically wrong in a city full of aging high-rises, overcrowded housing, and crumbling infrastructure, remember who Democrats put in charge and why they put her there.
It wasn’t because she was the best person for the job. It was because she was the best *story* for the press conference.
