In a weekend interview, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stated that the state has changed from a swing state to a GOP bastion ahead of the 2024 presidential contest as a result of the work he has done in office.
DeSantis made the comments when discussing the large number of Americans who have relocated to Florida in recent years from other states during a Sunday appearance on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
DeSantis told host Maria Bartiromo, “There had never been more registered Republicans than Democrats in the history of the state when I became governor of Florida.” And in 2018, there were about 300,000 fewer Republicans and Democrats. Currently, there are about 900,000 more Republicans than Democrats registered to vote. Thus, you are discussing a movement in voting registration of almost a million people.
“And sure, a big part of it, I believe, is a local reaction, where individuals in Florida are more likely to go from non-party to Republican than from Democrat to Republican, and that has been a big part of it,” he went on. However, I do believe that migration has skewed among those who move to Florida, not because they wish to see laws in Illinois, California, or New York changed to match their preferences, but rather because they value how Florida has approached the situation differently than their home states. Thus, I believe that has played a part in this very remarkable event.
He said, “Florida is off the board.” “You have covered politics; it is a Republican state.” That is no longer the case. In the past, Florida determined the outcome of every election, and we were a one-point state. Additionally, I believe this will benefit the party.
