Arctic Tensions Rise: Russia and China Close In

The Arctic is heating up—not just from climate change, but from rising military tensions. China and Russia are stepping up their joint efforts in the far north, and they’re pushing closer to U.S. territory, especially near Alaska. This isn’t about science or peaceful exploration. It’s about power, control, and testing the resolve of the United States and its allies.

General Alexus Grynkewich, the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, recently warned that both China and Russia are increasing their patrols in Arctic waters. These are not routine movements. These two countries are working together in a way we’ve never seen before in this part of the world. Their ships are traveling from the northern coast of Russia all the way to areas just north of Alaska. That should raise alarms for every American.

Let’s be clear—this is not about studying wildlife or doing harmless research. According to General Grynkewich, these operations involve bathymetric surveys, which map the ocean floor. That kind of data is crucial for military planning, especially for submarines and undersea warfare. China and Russia want to know how to move their submarines undetected and how to cut off our naval power if a conflict ever breaks out.

They’re not hiding their intentions. They’re doing this in plain sight. And while General Grynkewich says there’s no immediate threat to NATO, he admits the situation could escalate quickly. Russia is already deep into its war in Ukraine, but that hasn’t stopped it from teaming up with China to challenge us somewhere else.

This joint Arctic push is part of a bigger strategy from both countries. They know that the Arctic is becoming more important. As the ice melts, new shipping routes open up. More resources become available. And whoever controls those waters will have a major advantage. Russia and China want to be the ones calling the shots up there. They want to push the U.S. and our NATO allies out.

NATO isn’t taking this lightly. In a recent statement, the alliance made it clear that it sees the threat. They said, “Russia, China, North Korea and Iran are challenging us. But we are miles ahead.” That’s a good reminder that the United States still leads the world in military power and alliances. But we can’t afford to take our eye off the ball.

President Trump understands that. He’s once again bringing up the idea of acquiring Greenland. Some people might scoff at that idea, but it’s all about national security. Greenland sits right in the middle of the Arctic. It would give the United States a strong foothold in the region and help us keep a close watch on Russian and Chinese movements. Some lawmakers don’t like the idea, and some European countries are pushing back. But make no mistake—Trump is thinking long-term. He’s thinking about how to keep America safe.

Here’s the bottom line: the Arctic is no longer just a frozen wasteland. It’s becoming a battleground for global power. Russia and China are testing our limits, and they’re doing it right in our backyard. This is not the time to be passive. It’s time to increase our presence in Alaska, expand our Arctic fleet, and work closely with our NATO allies to make sure our territory—and our people—are protected.

As someone who served, I can tell you this: peace is kept through strength, not weakness. We need leaders who understand that. We need to be ready for what’s coming, because China and Russia are already suiting up. The question is—will we?
