Donald Trump Jr. unleashed a scathing critique of Mitch McConnell (R-KY), labeling him a “mentally declining pro-amnesty turtle” in reaction to the latest border security bill. This harsh rebuke underscores the deep divisions within the Republican Party over the proposed legislation, which Trump Jr. and other GOP members argue fails to adequately address the crisis at the southern border.
The unveiling of the border security bill has been met with significant pushback from key Republican figures. House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise have been vocal in their opposition, promising that the bill will face a dead end in the House due to its perceived leniency towards illegal immigration.
Scalise took to social media to highlight his concerns, pointing out that the bill would effectively sanction the entry of 5,000 illegal immigrants per day and grant automatic work permits to asylum seekers, actions he believes will only serve to attract more illegal immigration. Similarly, Johnson has expressed his disappointment, stating, “This bill is worse than we thought, and will not even come close to stopping the border catastrophe Biden has created.”
Breitbart News has highlighted that despite some concessions on border security, the bill contains several provisions that are unpalatable to Republicans. These include a multi-billion-dollar appropriations bill that would facilitate the registration, release, transportation, and housing of migrants across American cities and communities, raising concerns about lawlessness, financial strain, and social disruption.
Critics argue that the bill, touted as a “national security” measure, is a thinly veiled attempt to bolster President Joe Biden’s flagging poll numbers ahead of the 2024 election. They accuse the bill’s authors of obscuring its contents and potential loopholes, fearing that what is presented as restrictions could easily morph into government-sponsored incentives for further illegal immigration.
Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has also voiced her opposition, calling the bill an “absolute non-starter” and accusing it of further encouraging illegal immigration. She contrasts this with House Republicans’ HR2 – the Secure Our Border Act, which aims to reinstate Trump-era policies credited with significantly strengthening border security.
