Hollywood just can’t help itself, can it?
Marvel actor Anthony Mackie, who is set to take over as Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World, caused an online firestorm after boldly claiming that the patriotic superhero “shouldn’t represent America.” That’s right—Captain America. The guy with the red, white, and blue shield, the literal embodiment of American values, is now being stripped of his national identity because, apparently, Hollywood thinks patriotism isn’t marketable anymore.
He Does Know It’s Captain ‘America’ Right?
At a press event in Rome, Mackie told reporters, “For me, Captain America represents a lot of different things and I don’t think the term, you know, ‘America’ should be one of those representations.” Instead, he rambled on about the character being about “honor, dignity, and integrity.” While those are noble traits, let’s not forget who Captain America has always been: a symbol of American grit, justice, and good old-fashioned patriotism.
An Internet Bombshell Detonates
Naturally, his comments didn’t sit well with actual fans of the character. Social media erupted with backlash, with users on X (formerly Twitter) asking the obvious: “What did I just hear?” and “Does he not realize the name is Captain America?” Others predicted his film would flop, and honestly, they might be right.
Mackie quickly backpedaled, posting a clarification on Instagram: “Let me be clear about this, I’m a proud American… CAP has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to.” But the damage was done. Hollywood keeps trying to erase American values from American heroes, and people are getting tired of it.
They Never Learn
It’s the same tired script: take an iconic character, strip away its patriotic roots, and expect audiences to eat it up. But fans aren’t buying the woke rewrites anymore. If Captain America doesn’t stand for America, then who does he stand for?
