Temporary Protected Status Ends for South Sudan Nationals

The Trump administration just made a big change to how it handles immigration from South Sudan. After more than 14 years, the United States is ending deportation protections for South Sudanese nationals who have been living here under something called Temporary Protected Status, or TPS. As a veteran who’s seen what happens when we don’t put America first, I see this as a step in the right direction.

TPS was meant to be a short-term solution. It lets people from countries facing war or natural disasters stay in the U.S. for a time, until things improve back home. But over the years, that “temporary” label has been stretched way too far. Some people have been in the U.S. under TPS for over a decade. It’s become a backdoor way to stay, even when the danger in their home countries has passed.

South Sudan first got TPS back in 2011, after it broke away from Sudan and became its own country. Since then, the situation there has slowly gotten better. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the country has made progress in peace talks and has started working with the United States to help its people return safely.

Now, the Trump administration is saying it’s time for these folks to go home. And that makes sense. The U.S. government says there’s no longer a full-blown war in South Sudan. Sure, there’s still some violence, especially between different communities fighting over borders and resources. But it’s not enough to keep calling the place too dangerous to return to.

Some critics will say this move is heartless, but let’s be real. America has always been generous, but we also have to take care of our own. We can’t allow temporary programs to turn into permanent settlements. That’s not fair to the American people. It’s also not what these programs were designed for in the first place.

Under past administrations, both Democrat and Republican, TPS was extended over and over again—mostly for political reasons. That includes the Obama and Biden years, where they used TPS to score points and avoid making tough calls. But President Trump and his team are taking a different approach. They’re putting the law first and looking at the facts on the ground.

The DHS said it clearly: South Sudan’s government is now working with the U.S. State Department to make sure returning citizens are safe and welcomed. That means they’re ready to take responsibility for their own people again. And we should support that.

Let’s not forget, TPS has been abused before. In the past, people with criminal records or links to terrorist groups have hidden behind this program. That’s unacceptable. We have brave men and women risking their lives to keep this country safe. We can’t let bad actors slip through the cracks because of a broken system.

The Trump administration has already won some big legal fights over TPS. The Supreme Court gave them the green light to move forward with ending protections for Venezuelans. And a federal court recently cleared the way to end TPS for thousands more from Honduras, Nicaragua, and Nepal.

It’s clear this administration is serious about fixing our immigration system. That means enforcing the rules, defending our borders, and making sure temporary really means temporary.

In the military, we learned the importance of clear missions, firm boundaries, and following through. That’s what’s happening here. The mission was to provide safe haven while South Sudan got back on its feet. Now that the country is more stable, the mission is complete.

South Sudanese nationals who were here under TPS will now need to return home or face deportation. That’s not cruelty—it’s simply honoring the rule of law and respecting the American people.

It’s time to stop kicking the can down the road. America is a land of laws, not loopholes.
