The Supreme Court has done it again. In a move that should stun Second Amendment supporters across this nation, three justices appointed by Republican presidents—Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett—have sided with the liberal wing of the Court in refusing to hear a crucial challenge to Maryland’s draconian “assault weapons” ban. This decision not only leaves Maryland citizens defenseless against government overreach, but also sends a chilling message to gun owners everywhere.
Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by Justices Neil Gorsuch and Samuel Alito, courageously dissented, insisting that the Court should have addressed the question head-on. Thomas rightly warned, “I would not wait to decide whether the government can ban the most popular rifle in America. We have avoided deciding it for a full decade.” Thomas understands clearly what is at stake: the fundamental right of law-abiding Americans to protect their homes, their families, and their freedoms.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh, despite declining to hear the case, admitted in his statement that the arguments against Maryland’s ban were compelling. He observed: “Americans today possess an estimated 20 to 30 million AR–15s. And AR–15s are legal in 41 of the 50 States, meaning that States such as Maryland that prohibit AR–15s are something of an outlier.” Kavanaugh even conceded that AR–15s are in “common use” and thus should be protected under the Court’s landmark Heller decision.
Yet, in a bewildering contradiction, he voted with Roberts, Barrett, and the liberals to shut down the case before it could see the full scrutiny of the nation’s highest court. How can Americans trust a Supreme Court that acknowledges the merits of a case but refuses to defend constitutional liberties against state overreach?
The consequences of this decision extend far beyond Maryland. Similar bans in eight other states—Washington, California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Delaware—will remain intact. Millions of Americans in these states now face permanent denial of their constitutional rights, emboldening liberal legislators who see the Second Amendment as nothing more than a roadblock to their radical agenda.
President Donald Trump has consistently stood firm on protecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens, recognizing that an armed populace is vital to a free society. His administration has tirelessly advocated for constitutionalist judges precisely to prevent activist courts from stripping away our liberties piece by piece. Yet, today’s betrayal by three justices appointed by Republican presidents underscores the critical importance of vetting judicial nominees who will steadfastly uphold the Constitution.
Gun control zealots, emboldened by this decision, will undoubtedly push further restrictive measures, potentially leading to an even more egregious federal ban. Justice Thomas’s words should ring as a dire warning: the Court’s refusal to decisively affirm the Second Amendment paves the way for future assaults on our rights.
Make no mistake, the AR–15 is not merely a firearm—it is a symbol of American freedom, independence, and self-reliance. Millions of Americans choose this rifle because it is reliable, practical, and effective for personal and home defense. Any infringement upon this fundamental right must be viewed as an attack on our liberty itself.
Patriotic Americans must remain vigilant.
