Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, stated during a NewsNation town hall this week that if an “assault weapons” ban came to his desk, he would be signing it.
The question posed to RFK Jr. regarding a ban on “assault weapons” was written to represent the considerable support that Democrats have for such a law.
In response, RFK Jr. said, “I would sign it if we can come to an agreement on it, if both parties have agreed, and if it passes Congress.”
Just minutes after suggesting that firearms are not an issue, he said that “assault weapons” should be banned. He said that Americans have always owned firearms and that they once brought them to school for “gun clubs,” at which time no one ever considered firing at children.
Just over a week after publicly opposing gun control at a town hall in New Hampshire, RFK Jr. admitted he would sign an “assault weapons” prohibition.
According to RFK Jr. in New Hampshire, “Anybody that says you that we can put an end to the act of violence against our children that is currently occurring by taking away people’s firearms, in the margin that has been left to us through this extremely expansive ruling by the Supreme Court Bruen isn’t being honest with you.”
RFK Jr. also stated, “My stance on the issue of gun control is that I am not going to be taking away anybody’s firearms,” according to a Breitbart News story from June 5, 2023. “I’m a staunch constitutional maximalist, and the Supreme Court has already decided the matter.”
He made it plain at the NewsNation town hall meeting that he would approve a ban on “assault weapons” if it came to his desk.
