On November 2nd in Conway, South Carolina, something happened that should make every American stop and think. Around 10 a.m., four peaceful pro-life protesters were standing outside St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. They were on the sidewalk, not causing trouble, just standing up for what they believe in — the lives of the unborn. That’s when a man named Richard Lovelace came out of the building and walked toward them. Lovelace wasn’t just any man. He’s a retired lawyer, and his wife is a judge in South Carolina. She also sits on the board of that very church.
Now here’s where it gets serious. Lovelace didn’t just come out to argue or debate. According to police and video footage shared by the group called Survivors, he walked up to the protesters holding what looked like a live grenade. The video shows him lifting the device and saying it was “for y’all.”
Let’s be clear: even though the grenade turned out to be deactivated, the protesters didn’t know that. The detonator had been removed, but to the human eye, it looked real. That’s enough to scare anyone. That’s enough to make people believe their lives are in danger. Police confirmed this when they charged Lovelace with four counts of using a hoax device to threaten people. The law doesn’t take these kinds of threats lightly — and it shouldn’t.
What’s especially troubling is that this wasn’t some random act of violence. Lovelace’s wife and others at the church are strong supporters of the Palmetto State Abortion Fund. That group works with Planned Parenthood to send abortion pills into South Carolina and even helps women travel out of state to end their pregnancies. The Survivors group was protesting to shine a light on that. They believe in protecting the unborn. They weren’t armed. They weren’t violent. But they were met with what they believed was a deadly weapon.
Let’s think about this from a veteran’s point of view. I’ve seen what real grenades can do. They’re not toys. They’re not props for making a point. They’re deadly weapons designed for war zones, not sidewalks in small-town America. When someone uses even a fake one to intimidate peaceful citizens, that crosses a line. It’s domestic terrorism, plain and simple.
And yet, Lovelace was released on a $60,000 bond. That’s a slap on the wrist. If the situation were reversed — if a pro-life activist had walked up to Planned Parenthood supporters with a fake bomb — the media would be in full meltdown mode. There would be calls for federal charges, hate crime investigations, and wall-to-wall coverage. But because this happened to pro-life Americans, the story barely made a ripple in the mainstream press.
This isn’t the first time pro-life folks have been targeted either. Back in April, a Catholic pro-lifer was punched in the face during a street interview in New York City. Left bloody, he was doing nothing more than speaking up for the unborn when someone attacked him. That’s the world we’re living in now. If you stand up for life, you risk being silenced — or worse.
There’s something deeply wrong when one side of the political aisle gets a free pass to intimidate and threaten their opponents. We’re not talking about heated arguments here. We’re talking about people fearing for their lives. That should never happen in America.
Every American, no matter what side they’re on, should be able to speak freely without fear of violence. That’s what our country is supposed to be about. And if the justice system won’t hold people like Richard Lovelace accountable, then it’s up to the rest of us to keep the pressure on. We’ve fought for freedom before, and we’ll do it again — this time with our voices, our votes, and our values.
