Freedom Convoy Makes Progress as Three Provinces Lift COVID Restrictions

For nearly two weeks, a group of Canadian truckers—joined by many others—has been protesting their government’s ongoing COVID restrictions. The most egregious has been a vaccine passport requirement for those returning to the country from the U.S. Despite worldwide attention and near-universal support, the Canadian government, backed by PM Trudeau, has refused to listen to them.

The establishment in both the U.S. and Canada have tried to stop this “Freedom Convoy.” GoFundMe shut down a fundraiser for these protestors, on the false claim the movement has gotten violent. Ottawa police used intimidation tactics to scare them off, confiscating fuel and food. But none of this has discouraged these truckers. In fact, their example is sparking other movements across the planet. And now, provinces are starting to buckle.

Saskatchewan plans to end vaccination requirements by Feb. 14 and stop mask mandates two weeks later, The Toronto Star reported.

Hours later, the Alberta government announced the end of vaccine passport requirements Tuesday evening as part of a larger, multistep approach to eliminating most mandates, according to the Canadian outlet.

Notorious for having especially stringent COVID mandates, Quebec will no longer restrict private gatherings starting Saturday, and most restrictions are set to be lifted by March 14. [Source: Just the News]

Would you look at that? It seems people can make a difference. Thanks to the diligence of the Freedom Convoy—which at one point blocked the largest bridge between the U.S. and Canada—things are changing. To date, three provinces announced they would be lifting their restrictions, including vaccine passports.

Chances are, these are the dominos that will trigger other provinces to drop their restrictions as well. Even if Trudeau refuses to act, the truckers will have accomplished what they needed for the most part. What’s particularly shocking from this story is how the prime minister reacted. The man once compared to Barack Obama has come off as a sniveling coward. He’s refused to meet with the convoy organizers.

Worse still, he’s insulted the movement by calling it a “fringe group” made up of racists. The Freedom Convoy has only grown in recent days. Another crowdfunding effort (on another website) has managed to raise millions for the protestors. European countries have been forming their own convoys. And there could be a major protest in the United States soon to descend on Washington, D.C.

That doesn’t sound like a fringe group to me. Odd that a movement to end COVID restrictions is being branded “racist” by Trudeau. How is wanting freedom racist? I guess, like American leftists, Canadian leftists throw out baseless attacks when they have no legs to stand on.

This convoy will probably continue, despite these recent wins. They might not back down until Trudeau actually listens to them. It could take months.
