F-16s Scrambled as Drone Threatens Trump’s Plane

Two U.S. Air National Guard F-16C Vipers and a Coast Guard MH-65 helicopter were scrambled on January 26, 2025, to intercept a potential drone near President Donald Trump’s backup plane, SAM47, as it prepared to land at Joint Base Andrews. The incident, captured via flight tracking data and Air Traffic Control (ATC) audio, underscores growing concerns about drone threats to national security.

What Happened?
According to ADS-B Exchange data and ATC recordings, the SAM47 USAF Boeing C-32A, part of the presidential airlift fleet, was delayed due to a “potential drone” sighting near Freeway Airport, roughly 10 miles north of Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. ATC audio reveals that pilots were alerted to a “scramble in progress,” as F-16s (call signs BRAVE01 and BRAVE02) and a Coast Guard helicopter (call sign BLACKJACK01) were deployed to intercept the drone.

Despite the swift response, neither the F-16s nor the helicopter intercepted the target. The SAM47 aircraft landed safely and without incident. The 89th Airlift Wing, responsible for presidential transport, confirmed the delay but stated there was “no operational impact” on the landing.

The Bigger Picture
This incident comes amid heightened concerns about drone activity across the U.S., particularly in Northeastern states like New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Hundreds of unexplained drone sightings have raised fears of potential foreign involvement or security threats. Similar activity has been reported near American bases in the U.K., adding an international dimension to the issue.

Republican lawmakers and President Trump have called for decisive action, including authorizing the military to shoot down unidentified drones posing a threat to national security. Federal agencies are actively investigating these incidents, but addressing them remains complex due to the difficulty of tracking and neutralizing unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

Security First
While the SAM47 landing was uneventful, this close call highlights the growing need for robust counter-drone measures to protect America’s leaders and critical infrastructure. With President Trump prioritizing strong national defense and border security, expect further action to address the risks posed by these unmanned threats.
