Democrats Prove—Again—They Care More About Criminals Than Victims

Virginia Democrats are once again reminding voters exactly where their priorities lie—and it isn’t with the people who follow the rules. It’s with criminals.

HB 244 is the latest proof that the Democrat Party now views law-abiding taxpayers as expendable collateral damage.

Earlier this month, Democratic Delegate Vivian Watts introduced HB 244 under the soothing, dishonest language of “conforming” Virginia’s robbery statutes to the tiered system enacted in 2021. But strip away the jargon and what’s left is a radical reengineering of criminal law designed to protect criminals, shorten sentences, and undo consequences for people who commit violent crimes.

Every major provision of HB 244 moves in the same direction: softer punishment for robbers. The bill narrows the definition of “acts of violence” so that only the two highest degrees of robbery qualify. That means lower-degree robberies—still traumatic, still dangerous, still life-altering for victims—are downgraded by bureaucratic fiat. Apparently, Democrats have decided that being robbed “a little” isn’t violent enough to count.

HB 244 also changes how robbery offenses are scored under sentencing guidelines, opening the door to reduced prison time. At the same time, it expands eligibility for enhanced earned sentence credits and conditional release, including retroactive application. In other words, criminals already convicted could see their sentences quietly shaved down after the fact. The bill even allows early release for offenders deemed terminally ill—because nothing says “justice” like re-releasing people who already proved they can’t follow the law.

Then comes the real bombshell. HB 244 weakens Virginia’s three-strikes law. Mandatory life sentences would apply only to the two highest degrees of robbery, and parole eligibility could be restored if even one of the three qualifying convictions involved a lower-degree robbery. Translation: repeat offenders who were once locked away for life could now get another bite at the apple. Democrats want habitual criminals back on the streets, whether the public likes it or not.

Democrats claim this is a harmless technical fix that preserves robbery as a predicate offense and keeps the most serious cases classified as violent crimes. That’s insulting. Virginians have seen this movie before, and they know how it ends.

According to The Daily Caller in July 2025, nearly half of inmates released early under Virginia’s Democrat-backed Enhanced Earned Sentence Credits program were arrested again within a year. Nearly half. That’s not reform—it’s reckless endangerment. Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares called on lawmakers to “fix” a system that prioritizes offender leniency over public safety.

At a press conference, victims’ families delivered a brutal reality check. Angela Tyler-Tann, whose son was murdered by an offender released early despite a lengthy criminal record, said it plainly: “People’s lives are not video games that can be paused or restarted. My son’s death is final.”

This madness isn’t confined to Virginia. In New York City, Democrat District Attorney Alvin Bragg has turned downgrading felonies and declining prosecutions into official policy, while subway riders and store owners pay the price. California Democrats passed Proposition 47, turning theft into a low-risk career choice and hollowing out entire shopping districts. Bail “reform” laws championed by Democrats nationwide release criminals hours after arrest, often before victims have even processed what happened to them.

The underlying philosophy is as dangerous as it is delusional: criminals are the real victims, and everyone else just has to adapt. Democrats talk endlessly about “equity” while stripping ordinary Americans of the most basic expectation of government—public safety.

HB 244 hasn’t yet reached the House floor, but it fits perfectly into a pattern voters are waking up to. Democrats aren’t making communities safer. They’re making them more dangerous by design, then acting shocked when the consequences show up in police blotters and obituaries.

At some point, voters have to draw a line. How many more families have to be shattered before Democrats admit their pro-criminal obsession has crossed from misguided into outright insanity?
