According to information the Daily Caller (DCNF)Â got through a records request, there were a lot more reports of shoplifting and car theft in Springfield, Ohio, after thousands of Haitian refugees arrived.
In 2020, there were 58,622 people living in the town. In the last three years, between 12,000 and about 20,000 Haitian refugees have moved there, making the population grow by between 20.4% and 34.1%. The Springfield Police Division says that from 2021 to 2023, there was a 51.5% rise in reports of motor car theft and a 112.8% rise in reports of shoplifting.

In July, Bryan Heck, the city manager of Springfield, wrote a letter to Dem Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, GOP Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, and GOP South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott asking for help from the federal government to deal with the damage that migrants had done to the property market.
The DCNF also heard from people in the town who had seen Haitians doing sex acts and other bad things in public. Residents of the town told the DCNF that Haitians were debauching in public, but the DCNF couldn’t confirm this.
Springfield’s police dept. wouldn’t say anything about the crime statistics, which doesn’t show the criminals’ immigration status or other demographic information.
Springfield already had a greater crime rate than the rest of the country before a lot of Haitians moved there. According to statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the town had a crime rate of around 493.8 per 100,000 people in 2019, while the rate in the U.S. was only 366.7 per 100,000.
Police records show that the number of recorded car thefts in Springfield rose from 324 in the year 2021 to 491 in 2023. Reports of shoplifting went from 295 cases in 2021 to 628 cases in 2023.

Mike DeWine, the Republican governor of Ohio, has set aside $2.5 million to aid Springfield in dealing with the influx of migrants. On Wednesday, he also said that the Ohio State Highway Patrol would help with traffic control in the city. After a Haitian driver of a minivan without a license hit and killed a child and hurt about a dozen other students in August 2023, the issue of bad driving among refugees became a hot topic in the community.
