Maine Democrat Tells Susan Collins to 'Shut Up' — Then Brags About It on Camera

Troy Jackson, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Maine, told the longest-serving Republican woman in Senate history to shut up during a debate. Then he went on television and said he doesn't regret it.

"I'm not going to apologize for that, no."

The exchange happened after a 19-year-old protester named Henry Elgie interrupted the debate to yell about data centers. Senator Susan Collins pointed to the disruption and suggested it was coordinated. "This is obviously one of Troy's supporters," Collins said. Jackson's response was immediate: "Oh, shut up. I did not — I didn't — I don't even know that kid."

Elgie later confirmed he had no coordination with Jackson's campaign — though he did say he planned to vote for Jackson. So Collins was wrong about the setup. But Jackson's reaction wasn't about correcting the record. It was reflex.

Collins noticed. "I was struck by how reflexive the response, 'Oh, shut up,' was," she said afterward, adding that the speed of it "seemed like such an automatic, quick reply was very telling."

Given the chance to walk it back, Jackson leaned in harder. Appearing on CNN's State of the Union with Dana Bash, he reframed the whole thing as a matter of personal honor. "What I'm not gonna be is, you know, talked down to by Senator Collins," Jackson said. He then accused Collins of fabricating the coordination claim — "she accused me of setting that up" — before confirming, again, that he stands by every word.

Collins, who has served longer in the Senate than any Republican woman in American history, has pointed to what she calls Jackson's reputation for abrasive remarks toward women. Jackson hasn't disputed the characterization. He's just decided it's a feature.

The media response was exactly what you'd predict. Morning Joe — the show that has turned Senate decorum into a recurring dramatic monologue whenever a Republican steps out of line — ignored the story entirely. CNN aired it on State of the Union but treated it less like a controversy and more like a personality quirk. Dana Bash moved on. No panel discussion. No "what does this say about the state of our politics" segment. No concerned op-eds from the columnists who write them by the dozen when the roles are reversed.

A male candidate told a female senator to shut up on a debate stage. He did it on camera. He did it in front of voters. And when every microphone in the country was available for him to say "I could have handled that better," he grabbed one and said he'd do it again.

Collins has held that Senate seat since 1997. Jackson wants it. The voters of Maine now know exactly how he plans to conduct himself if he gets it.
