A former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, is set to plead guilty to federal charges, including tax evasion and creating false records, according to court documents. The plea deal, brokered by Justice Department special counsel David Weiss, could see Smirnov facing a prison sentence ranging from four to six years. The timing of this development, along with the accusations against him, throws a new twist into the ongoing saga surrounding Joe Biden and his family’s shady dealings.
Smirnov was arrested earlier this year after allegedly fabricating claims that executives from Burisma, the infamous Ukrainian energy company, had paid $5 million bribes to both Joe and Hunter Biden back in 2015 or 2016. Smirnov reportedly told the FBI that a Burisma executive said Hunter Biden had been hired to “protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems.” While Hunter Biden’s cozy seat on Burisma’s board during his father’s tenure as vice president has always raised eyebrows, prosecutors now claim Smirnov’s allegations were baseless and driven by his alleged bias against Joe Biden.
This latest twist conveniently undermines one of the central claims in House Republicans’ inquiries into the Biden family’s murky foreign business dealings. Smirnov’s statements had been a key piece of evidence, fueling suspicions about Joe Biden’s involvement in Hunter’s overseas escapades. It also became a flashpoint for Republicans’ impeachment efforts against Biden. But now, Smirnov’s credibility is being shredded, conveniently just as Republicans ramp up pressure on the Biden administration.
Smirnov’s legal troubles don’t end with his false statements about the Bidens. Last month, he was slapped with new federal tax charges for allegedly hiding millions of dollars in income between 2020 and 2022. His lawyers insist he will “vigorously fight” these allegations, but the damage to his reputation is done.
While Democrats and their media allies are no doubt rejoicing at Smirnov’s downfall, the bigger question remains: Why does this administration seem so determined to bury any investigation that touches the Bidens? For years, the mainstream press ignored the damning details on Hunter’s laptop. Now, the DOJ is using Smirnov’s guilty plea to deflect attention from the larger issue—Joe Biden’s suspicious entanglements with foreign entities while he was vice president.
The Democrats want you to believe this ends here, but it doesn’t. A mountain of evidence points to a pattern of corruption, from Hunter’s Burisma gig to the lucrative dealings with China. The only difference is that under a Republican Congress and a future Trump administration, no one will be allowed to hide behind a flimsy plea deal. Accountability is coming, whether the Democrats like it or not.
